Our specialist subjects reflect the Academy’s focus, but not to the detriment of any other subject. Humberston Academy recognises the importance of Maths and ICT as tools for life-long learning, essential skills for Higher Education and an ever-increasing requirement of employers.
Specialist status in Maths and Computing has helped us raise standards across the Academy curriculum by developing teaching and learning and by providing substantial additional resources. Achieving Specialist Maths and Computing College status has given us a great new reason to expect success across the curriculum. Thanks to Specialist Status, our Academy now benefits from a wide range of excellent facilities and equipment. All the classrooms are networked so every teacher has easy access to information and support in every lesson. Classrooms also benefit from interactive whiteboards which make teaching and learning even more successful. Our specialist status allows us to offer a wide range of additional opportunities to all our students. With specialist teaching giving everyone the enthusiasm and motivation to excel, our students build up the confidence to tackle a wide range of mathematical and Computing-related challenges throughout their time here.
The Academy embraces the views of The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust when it outlines the role as:
"Mathematics and Computing College's will raise standards of achievement and develop further interest of the specialist subjects across the whole ability range, leading to whole school improvement. Mathematics and ICT will improve the quality of teaching and learning in the specialism and develop innovative approaches to the teaching and learning of the specialist subjects. They will have a mathematically-rich curriculum that embraces all aspects of college life and will develop and share good practice across the curriculum, particularly through considered use of ICT.
"Mathematicsand Computing College's will be active partners in a learning society with their local education partnerships and communities. They will be the lead centre in sharing resources as well as developing and sharing good practice across the whole community. Colleges will also actively engage and work with business and industry to promote the use of mathematics and computing outside of the College."
Ofsted have supported the views of the Academy and during recent visits they have stated that:
“The drive and ambition in the leadership of the Academy’s specialist subjects are evident and there is a healthy professional rivalry between these subject leaders. Course changes in Mathematics, for example, are enabling students to access more academic and appropriate qualifications. Links are secure with local primary schools and help to raise the profile of the Academy within the local community.”
“During the inspection, teaching observed in Mathematics was very strong with matching high levels of progress and enjoyment from the students. A GCSE course for adults in the wider community has been established as well as activities for students in the feeder primary schools. The new director of specialism has brought a sense of urgency to wide n and monitor the impact of specialist status which is a strength of the Academy.”
