GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES

BRIEF OUTLINE

The course is designed to encourage you to consider the practical application of business concepts and theories. You will learn by studying real businesses, either through video/DVD, written case studies, visits or internet research. You will learn essential business terminology, and then apply them to solve business problems. You will take part in whole-class, small-group and individual activities involving discussion, presentation, problem solving and research.

 

COURSE CONTENT

You will study:

      - Setting Up a Business – this introduces you to issues concerning the setting up and operation of a business. Exploring activities of a business and reasons for success or failure. It encourages you to appreciate that businesses must operate within society and that this involves businesses engaging with a range of stakeholders.

      - Growing as a Business – this allows you to study businesses as they grow and the issues that expansion raises. This covers the right legal structure, ethical and environmental considerations, the relevance of the location, builds on the marketing concepts to be used to sell products/services, aspects of finance faced by large businesses becoming familiar with the sources of finance available, and simplified financial statements are introduced and analysed.

      - Investigating Businesses – this is a controlled assessment involving research and planning of pre-released material, where you will undertake a business investigation, then given a set amount of time to conclude your findings and research.

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED

Examination:

      - Setting up a Business - Written paper (1 Hour) 40%

      - Growing as a Business - Written paper (1 Hour) 35%

Controlled Assessment - Investigating Businesses 25%

 

WHY STUDY BUSINESS

Everyone is involved in businesses, either as a customer or as a worker or perhaps as an owner! Business Studies provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers such as accountant, personnel work, marketing, merchandising, banking, business management, advertising or the leisure industry.
