GCSE HISTORY

BRIEF OUTLINE

Sometimes working in teams, in pairs or individually, History will involve discussions, role plays, simulations, class presentations and videos/DVDs to help you learn information about the past. You will develop important skills such as effective note-making, making sense of lots of information and structuring extended answers and evaluating historical sources. This will allow you to understand historical argument and form your own opinions supported with evidence.

 

COURSE CONTENT

You will study WJEC History – covering the USA from 1910 to 2000

This will include topics such as:

      - the rise of organised crime

      - the Jazz Age

      - Boom and Bust

      - demand for Civil Rights

      - changing role of women

      - USA and World War II

      - The Cold War

 

You will also cover Germany from 1929-1947 (1 paper)

This will include topics such as:

      - how did Hitler rise to power

      - what was life like in Germany 1933-1939

      - how did war affect Germany 1939-1947

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED

Examination 75%

Controlled assessment 25%

 

WHY STUDY HISTORY

       -  a BBC survey suggested that History develops the exact skills employers are looking for: communication in writing and speech; team work; analyses and makes sense of different information

      - these qualities are highly valued and will open doors for careers in law, journalism, the media, the civil service, business management, social work and the heritage industry

      - it is highly valued by further and higher education institutions because it develops a strong academic foundation to build upon
