GCSE GEOGRAPHY

BRIEF OUTLINE

Geography will involve you studying case studies of places, you will become aware of the decisions that affect the lives of real people, including yourself! You will have the opportunity to experience a range of teaching and learning styles and you will frequently use a variety of information sources including the Internet, interactive whiteboard software, text books and working in groups on fieldwork. An important part of the course is taken up with a controlled assessment, worth 25% of the total grade.

Physical Geography: Human Geography:

   - Earthquakes and Volcanoes

 - Population Change 

   - Water on the Land

   - Changing Urban Environments

   - Climate Change

   - The Development Gap

   -  The Coastal Zone    - Globalisation
 

   - Tourism

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED

Pupils are allowed to be entered for 1 unit of the examination early (Year 10)

Examination 75%

Controlled assessment 25%

 

WHY STUDY GEOGRAPHY

      - communication skills

      - graphical and cartographical skills

      - Technological skills, including ICT

      - interpersonal skills through debate and discussion

      - literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills

      - entrepreneurial skills and awareness of career possibilities

      - all the opportunity for personalised and independent learning

      - provide candidates, for whom GCSE will be the end of their formal study of Geography, an overall view of the world in the first part of the century

      - provide a sound foundation for those candidates who intend to continue to study the subject to higher level

      - will allow candidates to fully appreciate and learn from the world around them
