BRIEF OUTLINE
You will study the 3 core units of chemistry, physical science and biology and 3 addiditional units. Assessment will be through building up a portfolio of evidence; this could be presentations you have delivered, scientific laboratory reports, posters, graphs, charts, etc. In lessons you will demonstrate practical and enquiry skills and allow you to interpret and analyse data to explain scientific theories.
COURSE CONTENT
You will study:
- Chemistry applications: including classification, properties of materials, chemical reactions and organic chemistry
- Physical science applications: including different types of energy and how these interact with different processes
- Biological systems: including how living organisms interact with each other and the environment, DNA, evolution as well as the human body

100% Portfolio (no examinations)
Students can be awarded:
- Pass (worth 4 grade Cs)
- Merit (worth 4 grade Bs)
- Distinction (worth 4 grade A’s)
WHY STUDY THE BTEC FIRST CERTIFICATE IN SCIENCE
- the BTEC First Certificate in Science will give you a valued qualification that is widely recognised. Students can progress to a Level 3 BTEC national qualification in the sixth form or Further Education colleges
- the course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare you for employment or further study of Applied Science
- this course will allow you to demonstrate your research, enquiry and communication skills, as well as your ability to work independently and ability to keep to deadlines
This is a Level 2 qualification. Students who make excellent progress and have the potential may have the opportunity to complete a BTEC first diploma which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.
