BRIEF OUTLINE
Humanities is a course that offers students a qualification that enables them to continue their studies across the traditional subjects of History, Geography and Religious Education.
It is ideal for those students who do not wish to limit their career options in Year 10, leaving the possibility of studying any or all of the above subjects at AS or A Level.
COURSE CONTENT
You will study:
- Patterns and Places (a Geography unit looking at topics such as Population, Earthquakes and Land Use)
- The USA 1945-1975 (A History unit looking at topics such as The Cold War, Civil Rights and American Society)
- Christianity and Contemporary Lifestyles (a Religious Education unit looking at topics such as marriage, Easter and charity)
- A Controlled Assessment – pupils will produce an extended essay on the Impact of Tourism or A Conflict of the 20th Century
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED
Examination 75%
Controlled assessment 25%
Each of the above units is worth 25% of the total examination (3 x 1 hour examinations and 1 controlled assessment in lesson time)
The Religious Education paper may be taken "early" in Year 10.
WHY STUDY HUMANITIES
- the specification provides opportunities for candidates to engage in a broad humanities experience thereby providing breadth, balance, differentiation and relevance
- the specification has been designed to make an important contribution to the whole school curriculum and, in this context, can be used to deliver a number of cross-curricular themes and key skills
