BRIEF OUTLINE
GCSE Music is aimed at students that play and have music lessons on an instrument to grade 3 or above. It is held as a twilight class after school for 2 hours a week. Students are expected to practise their instruments regularly and attend a minimum of one extra curricular activity held in the department every week. The course is modular with one listening examination held at the end of the course.
COURSE CONTENT
You will study:
- The history of Music from medieval to present day
- Genres of music to include; World Music, Western Classical Music, Popular music of the 20th and 21st Century.
- 5 Strands of learning looking in depth at the elements of music.
- Performances and performance Techniques
- Composition Techniques to enable to you to compose two compositions
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The course is delivered through 4 units:
- Unit 1 (20%) Composing and Appraising (Written Examination)
- Unit 2 (20%) Composing and Appraising Music (Controlled Assessment)
- Unit 3 (40%) Performing Music (Controlled Assessment)
- Unit 4 (20%) Composing Music (Controlled Assessment)
WHY STUDY MUSIC
- Music allows you to develop skills such as self confidence and creativity. You will demonstrate that you can work independently as well as part of a group. You will gain leadership and social skills.
- it is an excellent way to further your instrumental and creative skills.
- a qualification in music is essential if you wish to study Music or Music Technology at Higher or Further Education establishments.
